Notes for Alexander Dunbar
Virtually nothing of him is known.
His son Patrick refers in a document to his father the Lord Alexander son of the earl of Dunbar.
Scots Peerage said, based on the Treebury compact that he was the Alexander who was third son of the earl who died in 1289.
Complete Peerage said that he was the son of the earl who died in 1308.
Analysis of the generation lengths by John Ravilous has made it far more likely that Alexander was the son of the earl Patrick who died in 1308.
It sounds like there were, just to confuse things, two Alexanders.
