Scots Peerage says of his parentage:
“It is nowhere stated that he was the son of Archibald of Douglas, but the latters received, some time before 1226, thelands of Hermiston in Midlothian and Livingston in West lothian from Malcolm, earl of Fife, and as these lands are found later in the possession of Andrew, there is a strong presumption that he was the son of Archibald. ...”
