The Spoences came from Palgrave, Norfolk in the late 16th century. John was the fourth generation after the Norfolk family of William Spence. The first to leave Palgrave, Robert d. c. 1618, became a merchant in London and almost certainly founded the family fortunes which led to the purchase fo estates in Sussex, and residence near or in Balcombe.
