In 1881, still alive but a widower and retired.

In 1881 he had an Emily I Johnson staying with him, a few years older than his daughter Eleanor; my guess is that she was a relation.

On FreeBMND there are loads of JJJ deaths.  But only these look possible, for after 1881:

Q3 of 1890, aged 78, St Geo Han Sq, vol 1a, p. 299, - age spot on,
Q3 of 1895, aged 87, Edmonton, vol 3a, p. 202   - too old by 4 yrs.

I’ll go for the first.

For his marriage, the best info on FreeBMD is:

John James Johnson and Mary Judith Barson m in Q3 of 1852 in Havant district of Hants, vol 2b, p. 557.

But this needs a census or two to confirm it.  Unfortunagtely she died before the 1861 census.  Nor can she be found in the 1851 or 1841 censuses.
