Notes for Sir Roger de Venables
It is most odd: Ormerod gives an apparently well documented ancestry for Roger, Vol III, pp. 187-8, yet I can find nothing anywhere else to corroborate it. So I am leaving it out for the moment until confidence grows. The line starts with a Domesday entry, which can be confirmed in Keats-Rohan’s Domesday people:
Gilbert de Venables (aka Venator)
N. N.
Gilbert de Venables = Margery filia Walthew aka Waltheof
Sir William de Venables, d. c. 1228
Hugh de Venables = (2) Agnes de Oxton
Roger de Venables, d. c. 1261 = Alice de Penington
The 1580 visitation pedigree hardly corresponds with Ormerod’s pedigree at all. Possibly Ormerod was aware of the visitation pedigree and if so, would have had good grounds to consciously reject it; I am using this as an argument to endorse Ormerods analysis.
