Notes for Sir Alexander Cockburn
His father was another Alexander Cockburn who is said to have married Mariota, heiress of Veteripont and bringing with her the barony of Langton.  I am not including him as the evidence is getting very slight but see pp. 18- 42 of T H Cockburn-Hood’s Book “The House of Cockburn”

TFPL, May 2006: Very interestingly a new book, by some Cockburns, was published a few years after Cockburn-Hood’s book with many criticisms of Hoods capacity to invent ancestors and wives.  Any the result of this is that Alexander’s reported wife of Marjorie Cockburn has been deleted.

His sons were: Alexander, William, Patrick.

This book includes his father and his father’s marriage to Mariota Veteripont but has no references for this, so it is still being left out.  It says the marriage was about 1330, that she was an heiress and her father was Sir William Vipont who had been slain at Bannockburn in 1314.  She brought with her the baronies of Langton near Duns, Bolton near haddington and Carriden in Linlithgowshire.   Finally I still can find no reference to Mariota’s family in any other reference book; if they had such large holdings, where are they recorded?
