Notes for William Neville
There is no doubt but that this William is descended from Sir Ralph Neville, 3rd son of Ralph, 2nd baron Neville; this Sir Ralph acquired the Thornton Bridge estate by his marriage with the heiress daughter of Sir Alexander de Ledes. There are probably three generations between William the owner of Thorton Bridge and Sir Ralph the acquirer of same. But what precisely these generations are is not yet clear.

A note for the hopeful future: Yorks 1585 visit’n, p. 611, has Catherine Eure marrying Sir Alexander Nevill of Thornton Bridge. Alex d. c. 1457. She d. c. Jul/Aug 1459.

In Tonge’s Visitation of the North, p. 42, he is said to be a knight. VCH, N Yorks, Vol 2, pp. 98-103, confirms this and says he was knighted in 1482.
VCH also says that this William was the son of William who had died in 1468-9.
William the father was the son of Alexander Nevill and Katherine Eure. This Alexander was the son of another Alexander who was the son of Ralph de Nevill, younger son of Ralph Nevill of Raby. Ralph the son of Ralph had married the heiress Elizabeth de Ledes..
It sounds as if this descent is getting a bit more concrete. Let’s hope that Moriarty’s article “Nevill of Thornton Bridge” in The Genealogists’ Magazine of Dec 1959, delineates the descent more accurately

G A Moriarty refers to The Genealogist ns, vol 33 of 1917, p. 15 seq., by Canon Nevill, for this [Sir] William’s death.
But Moriarty also throws out the generation of an additional Ralph between William and the Ralph N who m. Anne Ward. Having done that Moriarty did nothing more for the earlier generations apart from saying that when William’s son Ralph died in 1522, his IPM clearly stated he was descended from the main Neville line of Raby and that Ralph was the son of William, but the IPM did not give the intervening generations.
The likely line is:
Ralph Neville = Alice Audley
|
Ralph Nevill = N. N. Deivill of Condall
|
Sir Alexander Nevill = Catherine, dau of Sir Ralph Eure
|
Sir William Nevill - Joan, dau of Xtopher Boynton (in Yorks 1584/5 vis’n)
But generations two and three of these are a tad unconfirmed.
