Notes for Joan Stafford
m. (1) Peter Gresley, (2) Walter de Montgomery.
Her father is identified solely from this phrase in Jeayes’ Gresley pedigree “fil Rob. Dom. Stafford” and the fact that there was only one Robert lord Stafford around over a hundred year period.

TFPL, Dec 2007: On the other hand Madan asserts that Joan’s (he calls her ‘Joanna) parents were Sir Robert de Stafford and Gundreda (d.c.1308) and that this Robert de S was the son of Sir William de S of Broomshull (living 1251-2) and Alditha Vernon. William de S was a younger son of Hervey Bagot and Millicent de S, the heiress.
She was abducted by John de Swinnerton very shortly after the death of her first husband but she managed to get away before 1320 as by then she was m. to Walter Montgomery.
It would seem, from the above and other comparisons that Madan’s account is more reliable than Jeayes’. So I am changing Joan’s parentage to Madan’s version.
