[Pr. 18 Sep. 1481, and adm. to Agnes the relict.]

(1)The head of an old East Riding family.  In 1474 he was sheriff of
Yorkshire. (Drake, 353.)  Burton Agnes came to the Boyntons through a
match with one of the testator's descendants in the 17th century.  On
Oct. 6, 1457, Walter Griffith of Burton Agnes, esq., and Joan his wife,
had leave to have an oratory for a year. (Reg. Booth, 400a.)  On Oct.
14th, 1458, they had a similar licence. (Ibid. 203a.)  Sir Walter
Griffith married Agnes, daughter of Sir Robert Constable of
Flamborough, knt.  She remarried Sir Gervase Clifton of Hodsack, Notts,
knt., and the vicar of Burton Agnes was desired to marry them on Sept.
10, 1483. (Reg. Rotherham, 39a.)  After her husband's death Lady
Clifton returned into her own country to die, and made her will at
Scarborough on Jan. 14th, 1505-6.  It will be printed in Vol. iv.
(2)Knighted, and high sheriff of Yorkshire in 1501. (Drake, 353.)  He
made his will in 1530, which I have no intention of anticipating here.
It is a most interesting document.
(3)This lady, who had a large fortune, married Sir Gervase Clifton,
knt., the son of her stepfather. (Thoroton's Notts, 55.)
(4)He was instituted to the vicarage of Burton Agnes on the death of
John Martyn, at the presentation of St Mary's abbey, York, on Jan. 17,
1460-1. (Reg. Will. Booth, 406b.)
