Subject: Coggeshall stemma

Using primary sources, which assistance from many posters (especially
Kelly Leighton, who has generously shared his research), we can
construct the following stemma for the Coggeshalls:

1. Lawrence de Coggeshall.  Father of:

2. Sir Ralph de Coggeshall, died c1305; called son of Lawrence in the
following document:

"12 November 1279 at Westminster: confirmation of a grant in frank
almoin which the King has inspected, made by Ralph son of Laurence de
Coggeshal to the church of St Mary, Coggeshal, and the monks there, of
the whole tenement which he had in the town of Markeshal of the gift of
Herbert de Markeshal" [Calendar of Patent Rolls, Edward I 1272-1281,
p333]; the original grant is probably that present PRO document C
143/4/10:

"4 Edward I: Ralph de Coggeshal to grant land at Markshall to the abbot
and convent of Coggeshall, Essex" (1275/6)

IPM: Ralph de Cokeshale alias Coggeshale alias Goggeshale: writ 4 May
33 Edward I: Inquests, Essex, 18-24 May 33 Ed I: Little Bemflet:
messuage and land held for life only of Laurence de Plumbergh, granted
to the said Ralph, John his son and Sarra wife of the said John, now
deceased, to them and the heirs of the said Sarra; Pakelesham: manor
held with John his son and Sarra the wife of the said John, to John and
Sarra and the heirs of the said Sarra; Codham manor; Shaldeford;
Dodenhoo manor; Coggeshale manor; heir: his son John, aged 26
[elsewhere in IPM 'aged 30'](Cal. IPMs Vol 4 Edward I #288 p 195)

married Elizabeth (enfeoffment of Ralph de Coggeshall and Elizabeth his
wife, manor of Duddenhoe, for life, 17 July 1279 - Fine Roll). Issue:

3. John de Coggeshall, born circa 1275-1279; died 1319;

"10 June 1305: pursuant to inquest showing Lawrence de Plumbergh
granted to Ralph de Coggeshale and John his son and Sarah wife of John
a messuage and 40 acres of land at Little Beniflete, to hold to them
and the heirs of the said Sarah, and that Ralph held the said tenements
on the day of his death by virtue of the said grant: to deliver the
same to John, he having done fealty" [Calendar of Fine Rolls, Vol 1
Edward I 1272-1307, p 521];

IPM John de Coggeshale: Writ 24 March 12 Edward II: Essex: marsh called
Rugworth, manor of Sutton; Codham manor; rent at Halstede, Little

Messingg and Inworth; manor of Pakelesham; manor of Bradeker in
Norfolk; heir: son John, aged 18" [Cal. IPMs Vol 6 Edward II, #210, p
128]

married Sarah, daughter of Lawrence de Plumbergh, dead by May 1395.
Issue:

4. Sir John de Coggeshall; born circa 1301; died 1361;

"IPM Sir John de Coggeshall: writ 26 June 35 Edward III: Suffolk:

Aysshenden" [Cal. IPMs Vol 11 Edward III, #52, p 36]

married Margaret, daughter of John de Staunton and co-heiress of her
brother Anfrid de Staunton:

"IPM Aufridus de Staunton: writ 3 January 11 Edward III [1338]: lands
at Wyleye, held with Margery his wife who survives; Bentley, Chicche
and St Osyth as foregoing; Alesford: manor and advowson; Wikes, 4
messuages; Tendryngg: 2 messuages; after the death of Margery, lands at
Wyleye, Bentley, Chicche and St Osyth go to Mabel, sister of Aufridus,
aged 30 and more; lands at Alesford go to John de Coggeshale, knight,
aged 30 and more, and lands at Wix and Tendring go to Hugh le Gros,

"IPM Margery late wife of Humphrey de Staunton: writ 24 July 17 Edward

John de Staunton [this is the charter in the PRO catalogued as C
143/92/9 - MAR]; the said Humphrey and Margery died without heirs of
their bodies; the said Philip died long ago in the time of his father;
the said Mabel still survives, and Roger de Stonham married her;
Alesford manor and advoswon, by grant to Humphrey and Margery de
Staunton, then to John de Coggeshall, knight and Margaret his wife, who
still survive, then to their son John, then to his brother Henry, then
to the right heirs of Sir John de Coggeshall; Margery died 18 July in
the year aforesaid; Hugh le Gros her kinsman is her next heir in blood"
[Cal. IPMs Vol 8 Edward III #444, p 293].

Issue:

5a. John de Coggeshall, o.v.p.

5b. Sir Henry de Coggeshall, born circa 1331; see biography in
Roskell's History of Parliament 1386-1421, Vol 2; married Joan de
Welle; issue:

6. Sir William de Coggeshall, IPM at Thaxted, 1 May 1426; land at
Wethersfield; by deed dated at Codham 14 May 1417 he granted the land
and pasture to Margaret Bateman, Hugh Luttrell and Roger Aston,
knights, Thomas Crosby, clerk and John Sumpter, and others now
deceased; he died 10 March last (no details as to heirs) [Cal. IPMs Vol
XXII]

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This clarifies several details, including that Anfrid de Staunton had
two sisters and coheirs, between whom his estates were divided by a
family settlement; John de Coggeshall did marry Margaret de Staunton,
and not her sister, who married Richard de Stoneham.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Furthermore, it is often stated (e.g. on innumerable websites) that Sir
Ralph's successor was his grandson John, not his son John, who is said
to have predeceased him in 1302.  As the above shows, this is not the
case.  There is a John Coggeshall with an IPM of 1302, but how he is
related to the above line, I do not presently know.  His details appear
to have been worked into the 1561 Visitation records from Essex,
further tainting that pedigree.

"IPM John de Coggeshale alias Cogesale: writ 23 June 24 Edward I;
inquest at Wyham 20 July 24 Edward I: land at Rewenhal; John his son
aged 30 is his next heir" [Cal. IPMs Vol 3 Edward I #323, p 201]

"IPM John de Coggeshale: writ 16 June 30 Edward I; inquest at Wyham
June 30 Edward I: capital messuage and 73 acres at Rewenhale; John his
son aged 12 on the feast of St James next (25 July - MAR) is his heir"
[Cal. IPMs Vol 4 Edward I, #73, p 44]

Subject: Sir Lawrence de Plumbergh (Coggeshall ancestor)

As noted in another thread, the main line of the Essex Coggeshalls, who
feature in the ancestry of the Prince of Wales; both his wives; Sarah,
Duchess of York, and the Countess of Wessex, are descended from the
marriage of John de Coggeshall and Sara de Plumbergh.  This corrects
the statement found elsewhere that Sara was the wife of Sir Jordan le
Brun. [TFPL: G F Beaumont fin his Coggeshall book urther complicates theissue by saying that Sarah was the daughter of Jordan le Brun.]

The Plumberghs were Essex tenants in chief during the time of Henry III
and Edward I.  A tentative stemma follows:

1. Thomas de Plumberghe alis Plumberche: writ 11 April 31 Henry III:
Laurence his son is his heir, aged 30 and more; land at Sutton and
Plumberch [Plumborough, Essex - MAR]; died seised of the marsh of Magna
Rogewerde: Christiana his wife took the profits thereof to the use of
the said Thomas until death; he died seised of Bekener and Lovedone,
Langeleg wood and 20 acres of land at Rocheford: they fall to Laurence
his heir; a further 20 acres at Plumberge belong to John his son who
has full seisin thereof [Cal. IPMs Vol 1 Henry III p 23]

married Christiana.  Issue:

2a. Lawrence de Plumbergh, born circa 1217; IPM: writ 8 February 37
Henry III: 'Laurence de Blumberg or Plumberg': John son of Thomas, his
brother, is his heir, aged 25; Essex: Sutton, Plumberg; the wife of
Thomas de Plumberg holds £10 of land in dower [Cal. IPMs Vol 1 Henry
III p 75]

2b. John de Plumbergh, born circa 1228

*********** Possibly father of:

x. Sir Lawrence de Plumbergh, commissioned, as Laurence de Plumber', re
Counties of Essex & Herts as to who should be made Knights, 12 March
1279 [Cal. Patent Rolls, Edward I p 342] granted land to his
son-in-law's family, the Coggeshalls, before 1296 (see following); dead
by 1296;

married Isabel: "1296: a messuage and 12 acres at Colchester, to Isobel
widow of Lawrence de Plumbergh, to hold for life" [Fine Rolls].

Issue:

xi. Sarah de Plumbergh, dead by May 1305; married John de Coggeshall
(c1277-1319) and left issue.
