Notes for Ralph Mainwaring
The 1580 vis’n reports of him “very old anno 22 H. 6 [1444] in wch yeare he made his will”.

Ormerod says he and Margery had (a) sons:
1. John
2. William ex quo Mainwarings of Ightfield
3. Randle ex quo Mainwarings of Carincham, Cheshire
(b) daus:
1. Elizabeth n. Raufe Egerton of Wrynehill, Staffs,
2. Cicely m. Thos Fowleshurst of Crew, Cheshire
3. Joan m. John Davenport of Davenport, Cheshire
4. Ellen m. Thos Fitton of Gowesworth, Cheshire
5. Agnes, d. young
6. Margaret m. (1) Wm Bromley, (2) sir Jno Nedham.

Omerod also says he had three bastard sons and three bastard daughters and (yet) in the local chapel where he was buried “Margery his wife, surviving, erected, with two monuments thereins, for her self and husband, anno Domini 1456”.

However the dates that Ormerod gives make me wonder if a generation might have been omitted.:

1. His father died in 1364
2. Ralph was the eldest of five sons and even had three sisters though they may all have been older than he.  It is likely then that Ralph was born no later than 1359.
3. Ralph make a petition to the king for licecne to have married his wife, after that marriage.  The petition was in 16 Rich II, c. 1393 when he was at least 34, which is slightly old but not impossible.
4. Ralph died in 1456, aged at least 97.  OK the visitation reports him to be very old in 1444, but 97 is extremely old, though not impossible.
