The Will with a Codicil of Harriet Sampson formerly of 105 Eaton-square and afterwards of 3 Cambridge-square both in the County of Middlesex but late of Wateringbury in the County of Kent Widow deceased who died 17 March 1868 at Wateringbury aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oaths of John Vigne of Tokenhouse-yard in the City of London Esquire and Henry Ray Freshfield of Bank-buildings in the City aforesaid Esquire two of the Executors.

I am ordering this to see if there is any mention of her niece Mary Elizabeth Brown in the will.
Yes. She left her possessions between her neice Mary Elizabeth Brown and her daughter, Harriet’s god-daughter, Harriet Amelia. Her cash went to:
1. William Brown, husband of Mary E,
2. Her god-daughter Harriet Amelia,
3. Sarah Welbank, widow of her brother Robert Welbank
4. Minor bequests to friends,
5. £10,000 in trust for Elizabeth Brown, then to her and William Brown’s children
6. A separate trust for the children Elizabeth and William Brown.
In other words, Mary Elizabeth Brown (she corrected herself in a codicil) was the heir to Harriet and I get the strong feeling that Harriet Sampson took in and looked after the two children of George Welbank on the latter’s death.
