Notes for Richard Charlton
I am following the 1623 Salop Visitation here in spite of corrections by Martyn Freeth. He had said that the father of William was Robert who m. Eliz Mainwaring and further that Robert was the son of Sir Thomas; I have yet to find any confirmaiton of this and await further information.
Some confirmation of the visitation is to be found in “The Cartularies of John Pyel and Adam Franceys” by S J O’Connor, pub in the Camden Series in 1993; however this shows that Thomas Charlton (d. 1445) and Elizabeth Franceys (d. 1451) had a son _Thomas_ (d. 1465) who had a son Richard (d. 1485); the book refers to Roskell’s “House of Commons 1386-1421”.
Examining the death dates, Sir Thomas d. in 1461, aged 67, and his grandson William in 1564. This gap of 103 years seems excessive and it looks far more likely that there was an additional generation, as in the Visitation of 1623.
