Notes for John Cheyne
Anne Lane gives his origin as followe:

"I've dug up another Cheyney relation for you - a vicar this time!

"If you read VCH for L'stn you see a John Cheyney, vicar of L'stn St
Michael is mentioned in 1432.  Another reference to this man is in Cal
Pat 1429-36, 481: (3 Dec 1435) pardon to John Cheyne of L'stn Clerk
alias Esq for ....etc....

"This chap must be a descendent of the Cheyneys of Cheyneys  manor in
L'stn as follows:

"East Anglian n.s. x296-7: Charter re. land in Cottenham of John Cheyne,
Gent, of L'stn: .... (297): John Cheyne senior and heir of Sir William
Cheyne of L'stn (1427/28).
"(And this is not the only reference to a John 'senior' that I have found
around this time...)
"eg: PRO CP40/847, rot 117 (1473): ... and the said John Cheyney Senior..
and wife Margery defendants over Colvylles manor....
"(NB the above 3 refs I got from VCH's notes they made on the manors in
L'stn - the ref for this in the CRO is R91/18)

"So this John Cheyne 'senior' was William's son (along with Lawrence) who
inherited L'stn estates from his father, William.  Although Complete
Peerage in the Engaine section says this John Cheyne died without
issue/before his mother I think there is confusion here.  In 1397 and
1400 a John Cheyne and his wife licensed a chapel in their L'stn manor
house (Ely Diocese Remembrance records) and in 1406 John Cheyne and his
wife Margery entailed the manor (see VCH).  So it looks very much like
this vicar, John Cheyney, was the son of John and Margery, and grandson
of William, and therefore Lawrence was his uncle.  So he must have died
unmarried/without children and at this point the L'stn manors passed to
either Lawrence or his son Sir John (depending on when the vicar died).
He had not been the vicar of St Michael for a while presumably by 1466
because a Nicholas Sylvester was appointed vicar, because his
predecessor, James Sodelombe (or somesuch name) had resigned.
This idea is supported by the following ref: (from R91/18 again): PRO
Prob 11/6, ff 4v-5v 1468  Will of Thos Burgoyne: ... John Cheyne of
Ditton... (has)... divers tenements in L'stn ... if he (John) can agree
to release all his claim to them.... which were of John Cheyne, late
rector of St Michael in L'stn...."

"Clearly it is confusing because you have references to father and son,
both John, in the early 1400s together.  However I think father was a
Knight and clearly son was not (ie a clerk or vicar).  In other words
this vicar John Cheyne was presumably the last owner/occupier of
Cheyneys manor in L'stn before it passed, after his death to his Fen
Ditton relations."
