Notes for Sir John de Arden
In Ormerod's Cheshire, vol ii, p. 76 there is some speculation on how John de Arderne obtained the manor of Aldford. There are two old suggesitons:
1. That John de Arderne was in fact the son of Richard de Aldford.
2. That John married the dua & heir of Raich: de Alford.
Omerod initially came down on the side of the first of these, but later discoveries forced him to adopt the latter account and this is what is in the printed pedigree of the second edition.
That said, the next suggestion from Ormerod is that Richard de Alford was the maternal grandson of Rcihard fitz Eustace, constable of Cheshire. Ormerod finds some confirmation of all this in that John de Arderne's seal resembled that of of the constables of Chester - three garbs.
