Notes for David de Lindsay
Nov 2004, TFPL: His marriage and parentage is the subject of debate.
On the one hand Scots Peerage, at least, says he was the son of William de Lindsay and Eleanor de Limesi. Linzee's history of the Lindays supports this.
On the other hand Sanders in his baronies and Keats-Rohan in Domesday descendants both say that it was he that married Eleanor de Limesi. This is supported by the Earlier Suffolk Manors by Copinger.
In either case, his descendants definitely descend from Eleanor de Limesi, but in the latter case his brother William does not. Currently I am takign the view that the later works are more accurate but the matter is being debated on the newsgroup soc.genealogy.medieval and may yet change.
With the choice I have made, Eleanor, known in charters as Alice, de Limesi is not ancestral.

TFPL, Jan 2013: At last someone has looked into these Limesi-Lindsay problems and come out with a best but not exact fit. Reading Alex Maxwell Findlater’s article in Foundations vol 4 makes me realise that I would be completely out of my depth dealing with the medieval latin texts he references. So I am accepting his views with the reservations he expresses, until someone else finds some different information or interpretation of the texts. Anyhow Alex Findlater concludes that this David Lindsay was son of Alicia Limese and William Lindsay and David married Margery a natural daughter of David earl of Huntingdon by which his Pinkeny descendants became Competitors (for the Scots crown).
