Percy Goddard Stone was born on 15th March 1856, in London, the son of Coutts Stone, an Architect.
Taking up his father's profession, Stone came to the Isle of Wight, and began his investigations into the architectural antiquities of the Island.
In 1879 he married Fanny Maria Belden Powys, daughter of James Morrell Coventry Powys, a Gentleman.
They had five children, four girls and a boy, Percy Vere Powys Stone, who was born in 1883.
One daughter (Winifred Powys) is buried at Shanklin Cemetery and there is an additional grave marker for P V P Stone too.
His wife died in 1898; he remarried, Amelia Frances Smith, a member of the Roach Smith family of Sandham (Sandown).
Percy Goddard Stone worked on architectural investigations at Quarr Abbey in 1891, the same year that he published his definitive survey of "The Architectural Antiquities of the Isle of Wight from the XIth to the XVIIth centuries inclusive".
Stone also wrote the Isle of Wight section of the "Victoria County History of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight" (Volume V, published in 1912).
This drew on the local knowledge of Sir John Oglander, but it was not without errors.
His architectural commissions included work on the Gatehouse at Carisbrooke Castle, and the rebuilding of the Chapel of St Nicholas as the memorial to Charles I, who had been imprisoned there. The chapel was rebuilt in 1904.
Stone also designed the chancel screen at St George's Church, Shalfleet, in honour of Thomas Hollis, a local man.
Stone's most important work was the redecoration of the Chapel of St Nicholas at Carisbrooke Castle, as the Isle of Wight County War Memorial. This occupied him from 1919 up to 1929 when the Chapel was re-dedicated.
Percy Goddard Stone died on 21st March 1934 at The Cottage, Merstone, Isle of Wight.
