He also has strong scientific interests, was elected FRS and read several papers there, discovering a mineral cadmium sulphite, named after him as greenockite.
He was a direct descendant of the lords Cathcart of Scotland, being the eleventh lord thereof (the third of whom is a Trotter and thus P-L ancestor).
