Notes for Sir Adam Hepburn
On 2 Nov 1411 he had a papal dispensation to marry Janet, dau. of William Borthwick but there is no evidence that they married (SP, vol 9, p. 39, pub 1914). CP (vol XII/1, pub 1953) refers to his children as “presumably by Janet, da. of William Borthwick”.
By 1981 Neil Thompson and Charles Hansen had commenced their major survey of the Ancestry of Charless II in The (American) Genealogist. This study went on, vol 12(1):90 #519, to include explicitly that Janet Borthwick was the wife of this Adam Hailes and thus the mother of his children. If this is accepted, there are one or two earlier Borthwick generations to be added in from Scots Peerage, vol 2, pp. 94-5.
