Subject: Re: Thomas de Gray of Heton Sister Joan

Mike Welch thought that there was some confusion between Isabel de Grey, wife of William Heron and Lady Joan Heron, sister of Sir Thomas Grey, so I am posting the following to explain the relationships.

The record Mike posted is a rich source for a number of reasons as it identifies Joan as (1) a sister of Thomas Grey of Heton d.1400, (2)  widow of Sir John Heron of Crawley, (3) the wife of Sir Ralph Cromwell d.1417, and (4) highlights the relationships between the families named in the marriage settlement.

Thomas Grey and Margaret Presfen are known to have had a daughter named Joan (she actually seems to have been known as Jane), as seen in CP IV 62 note (f) which says that in 1367 Thomas conveyed all his lands to himself and Margaret, dau of William de Presfen, and their heirs, rem. to Joan de Coupland for life and with successive remainders to John Gray, Thomas Gray, Jane, Elizabeth, and Agnes children of the said Margaret. From this it is reasonable to assume that Joan/Jane must have been their eldest daughter.

Looking at the marriage settlement a number of people can be identified by their relationships to the couple.

Marriage settlement (indented)
Creation dates: 3 Jul 1387
Scope and Content
Sir Ralph de Crumwelle the younger and Sir Thomas Gray, lord of Hetton [Yorks., W.R.] and Sir Thomas Doumfrayville. On the marriage of Sir Ralph and Lady Joan Heron, sister of Sir Thomas Gray, which is to take place at Michaelmas next, Gray, Doumfrayville, John de Dranffeld and Hugh de Mitford bound to Sir Ralph and Sir William fitzWilliam in a certain sum of money. Witnesses: Sir Darcy, Sir William fitzWilliam. Sir John de Birton, Sir Richard Parson of Anston [Yorks., W.R.], William de Leke, and Hugh de Mitford. Given at Temple Hurst.'

Sir Thomas Grey of Heton role as Joan's principal in the settlement is obviously as her brother and senior male representative. Sir William fitzWilliam's involvement comes about as brother-in-law to Sir Ralph Cromwell, the younger, having married his sister Maud, and "Sir Darcy" as witness must be Sir Philip Darcy who was Sir Thomas Grey's brother-in-law, having married his sister Elizabeth. The reason for the involvement of Sir Thomas Umfraville is less obvious, though it may be of significance that his grandmother Eleanor (Lumley?), widow of Robert de Umfraville, Earl of Angus, remarried Sir Roger Mauduit of Eshot, Northumberland, Chamberlain of Scotland d.1351 [CP I 150], whose descendant Roger, son and heir of John Mauduit of Burton Leonard, quitclaimed Eshot to Sir John Heron of Crawley in 1375. It is possible that Sir John Heron may have had a Mauduit wife, in which case his children could have shared common ancestry with Sir Thomas Umfraville via Eleanor. Further evidence of interaction between the families is that Gilbert Umfraville was son and heir of Thomas, and at his proof of age in 1412 [CIPM XIX no. 1005] it is stated that his godmother was Elizabeth Heron who travelled from Rothbury to Harbottle where the baptism took place on 18 October 1391. She may have been the wife of Sir Gerard Heron.

Tony Ingham did some valuable research into primary sources for the Herons of Crawley two years ago while investigating the mistakes in the CP version of the Herons of Ford, (this was later written up by Chris Phillips and published in Foundations vol. 1, no.2  p.132-134). From information Tony has passed on, and other sources, it is possible to place Joan within the family structure.

1. Sir Roger Heron of Ford, Northumberland d.1333
+ Isabel Swinburne d. 1326
    2. Sir William, Lord Heron of Ford d.1379
+ Isabel de Grey, had issue
    2. Sir John Heron I of Crawley, Constable of Norham castle, Knight of the Shire 1379 d.1386.
[+ Elizabeth d. 1386, not mother of Sir John's children, widow of NN de Bowes and Sir Robert Eslington, her heir was her son William de Bowes [CIPM XVI no.251]]
        3. Sir William Heron, Lord Say, steward of the Household to Henry IV, d.s.p.1404
        +Elizabeth Say d.s.p. 1399
+Elizabeth Botiller of Sudeley d.1465, married secondly John Norbury of Cheshunt d.1414, thirdly Sir John Montgomery d.1449
        3. Sir Gerard Heron of Eppleton, co. Durham & Twizell, Northumberland, Constable of Norham castle, Escheator in Norhamshire and Islandshire, Knight of the Shire 1391-1402 d.s.p. 1404 [HOP v.4 p.353-356]
+ Elizabeth Tailler of Little Usworth, co. Durham
        3. Sir John Heron II d.v.p.1384/5
        + Joan de Grey d. 1434, remarried 1387 Sir Ralph de Cromwell d. 1417
            4. Sir John Heron III 1381-1420
+ Mary NN d.1459. She married secondly William Clinton, Lord Say d. 1431, thirdly Sir Henry Retford the younger, attainted 1459. [CP II 315 has this in the wrong order]
                5. John Heron IV b. 1413
            4. William Heron d.s.p. by 1404
            4. Nicholas Heron of Eshott and Twizell d.s.p. 1409

Joan's first husband was Sir John Heron II (d.v.p.c. 1384/5), younger son of Sir John Heron I of Crawley, Hedgeley, Hartside, Morton, and Beal, Eshott, East Duddoe and Bockenfield, Northumberland, Eppleton, co. Durham and Twizell in Norhamshire (d. bef 14 July 1386, being brother of William, Lord Heron of Ford, husband of Isabel de Grey). Sir John Heron II and Joan had a son and heir, Sir John Heron III, b. c.1381 (24 in 1405), and he was the eventual heir of his uncles, Sir William Heron, Lord Say and Sir Gerard Heron, who both died without issue in 1404. In 1401 Sir William Heron purchased the reversion of a sixth part of the Say inheritance of his first wife, Elizabeth Say, from one of her heirs, Maud Daldoun, widow of Thomas Bosenho, which passed to John Heron III on his death. In probably the same way some of the Brewse of Manningford Bruce inheritance, comprising parcels of land in Gate Burton, Upton and Lea in Lincolnshire found its way to John's aunt and uncle, Eliza!
beth and Philip, Lord Darcy via their feoffees, which included Hugh de Mitford who was party to Ralph and Joan's marriage settlement.

The 1405 Northumberland inquisition post mortem for Sir William Heron, Lord Say  [CIPM v. XVIII no. 1070], records that he held in fee tail the manor of Eshot, and lands in Clifton, Colwell and East Duddoe, Northumberland, held of John Scrope and his wife Elizabeth in right of Elizabeth (CP XI  564 n (a)), of the barony of Mitford. This manor had been settled with successive remainders in 1384/5 by Sir John Heron I in the following order - Sir William Heron, Sir Gerard Heron, their nephew John, son of John Heron, and his brothers William and Nicholas. However the inquisition omits John, giving Nicholas, John's younger brother, as survivor and the rightful heir. Nicholas died without issue in 1409 when Sir John Heron III took possession, becoming the ancestor of the Herons of Eshott Hall.

In 1406 Joan's two surviving sons, Sir John Heron III and Nicholas Heron appear with her husband, Sir Ralph Cromwell, and their son, Ralph, in the following deed of gift by Robert Belle.

Relations between Sir Ralph Cromwell and his step son, Sir John Heron, must have been cordial as the latter acted as a feoffee for him as seen in the following deed of gift, presumably made preparatory to a feoffment.

Joan survived her second husband Sir Ralph, as is evident in the following quitclaim. William "Iors" below is probably William Jorce and Sir Richard Stanhope was the husband of Maud daughter of Sir Ralph and Joan Cromwell.

In 1428, as Joan Heron she is recorded as holding the vill of Hedgeley for a quarter of a knight's fee [Feudal Aids v. 4 p.88]. This was one of the estates (with Crawley, Beal and Hartside) of which John Heron I made a settlement in 1345 [Northumberland and Durham Deeds (N.R.C.), pp. 98,99,100,105. - Tony Ingham].

CP III 552 records that Joan made her will on 26 July 1434 which was proved on 10 August the following month.  It was published in J. Raine (ed). Testamenta Eboracensia Vol II (Surtees Society publication no. 30) p. 39-41, and is a brief document written, and instructing burial, at Lambley, Nottinghamshire, the last resting place of the Cromwells, and leaving bequests to the church there. Also mentioned are her son, Ralph, daughter, Maud, with her husband Richard Stanhope, and Joan's servants. There is no mention of the Heron family but her three sons were all dead by this date.

G. Watson in "William Heroun, knight, Lord Say" Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica, vol. 9, 5th series p.241 records Joan's inquisition post mortem taken in October that year which establishes her as widow of Sir John Heron II, mother of Sir John Heron III, and grandmother of John Heron IV. The date given for her death (12 September) is not correct.

"Johanna que fuit uxor Johannis Heron chivaler defuncti. Writ of diem cl. ext. 20 Oct 29 Langley (Durham Chancery Roll, no.37, m 12d.) Inq Norhamshire 25 Oct 1434. She held lands and tenements in Tweedmouth. "Et [dicunt] quod dicta Johanna obit die Dominica proxima post festum Nativitatis beate Maria ultimo preteritum. Et quod Johannes Heron filius Johannis Heron chivaler et consanguineus dicte Johanne est heres ejus propinquior videlicet filius dicte Johannis Heron chivaler filii predicte Johanne et est etatis xxi anni et amplius." (Durham Cursitors Records, no. 2, f. 276 or 280, r and v)"

The lands subject to the inquisition may have been in Morton in Tweedmouth which John Heron I had bought from John Clifford before 1344/5 [Raine, North Durham, pp. 204, 254n - Tony Ingham], and on 3 November 1434, having given the bishop of Durham his fealty, John Heron IV took livery of them.

By 1397 all Joan's issue by Sir Ralph Cromwell was extinct but her Heron descendants continued to flourish long afterwards.

My thanks to Tony for assisting with this post.

Cheers

Rosie
