Notes for Edward Powys Mathers
John Morgan relates:
Edward Powys Mathers ("Bill" to his friends) was an extraordinary man, who pretty well single-handedly established the first "cryptic" crosswords (as Torquemada in the Observer), translated (very readably) the 1001 Nights from a French version, was for 5 years the Observer's crime fiction reviewer, smuggled the plates of James Joyce's then banned Ulysses into England from Paris for reprinting by Ezra Pound's sidekick John Rodker, and had a circle of acquaintance ranging from Eric Gill (who described him as a "very naughty man") to Dorothy L Sayers (who knew him from when she worked for Blackwells in Oxford and became a devotee of his crosswords).
