These is a conflict between John Smyth and the 1623 Glos visitation. In Smyth, John is the ancestor but in the Visitation he is a a clerk (= priest) and it is William who is the ancestor of the following generations.
The Visitation then goes on to show John and William in the next generation with Smyth’s descriptions.
I have no idea which was right.
Second thoughts shows that John Smyth married a descendant of these Brownings, so I am more likely to believe him as he was fairly careful in such matters, particularly those families that he knew well.
