Her death cannot be found on FreeBMD from 1850 to 1890.

In her father’s will he refers to a marriage settlement when she married Donald MarlMaclean(?) Esq.  This needs following up.  Done and marriage found.

Did they have any children?

It appeared that both survived to at least 1828 from the words in her father’s will.

There are two clutches of children both to parents of Donald and jean MacLean, earlier a brood at St Pancras, London and later a brood at Kings Stanley, Gloucestershire.  These could all be Jean’s if she was following her mother’s stamina at producing babies.  They are: in the order found and later put into date order within location:  ‘HC’ is short for Hard Copy and indicates that a copy of the actual register has been obtained, even though it is only an electronic copy.

A brief glance at the above lists of child baptisms shows that the two lists are precisely successive.  The breeding at one house stopped and then continued in another.  I would conclude confidently that it is the one family and that they had moved from London to Gloucestershire.

This is corroborated by the 1841 and 1851 censuses which has them back in Brunswick Square, St Pancras

Note that Catherine’s name was actually written as Octa, where the a was superscripted, not Ada, but a casual glance would see only ‘Ada’.

In 1861 she may have been the Jean MacLean with a son William H Maclean living in Allerton, South Lancs.  But the son’s age was transcribed ss ten years younger than actual; on the actual form it was clearly 39 with a curious twiggle at the top of the three and of all other ‘3’s on the page, not the 29 as transcribed.  It has to be them.  See William Henry’s Notes for full details.

In 1891 she cannot be identified, though there is a Jane Maclean of the right age but stated to be born in Carlisle and living in South Leith, the place of her birth.

At least her first four children were baptised by Rev Robert Mayne, Robert Mayne, Rector of Limpsfield, Surrey.  I stgrongly suspect he was a relation of hers from he paternal grandmother Jean Mayne.  IN the Spectator there was a death notice in the issue of the 13 Marc h 1841: “On the 7th inst.. at Tunbridge Wells. the Rev. ROBERT MAYNE, in his 63d year, for thirty-four years Rector of Limpsfield, Surrey.”

Apparently the Mayne family were in a few Burke’s landed Gents.  Certainly they were in Commoners, Vol 2, p. 141 where William Mayne’s first wife, Helen Stark, was the mother of Jean who married John Brown and gave birth to George Brown, the father of Jean.  And the second wife of William Mayne was Helen Galbraith and their second son Robert became a London banker and married Anne Knight and they had a second son Robert, this rector it seems.

Needs a little bit of validating but it shows that Jean was in touch with her first cousin.

Rev Robert got a fuller entry in the 1952 edition of Burke’s Landed Gentry.  And that article includes a mention of Jean Mayne who married John Brown, of Glasgow, merchant.

11 March.  Administration with the Will of the Personal Estate of Jean MacLean late of Beech Farm Liverpool in the County of Lancaster Widow who died 13 September 1872 at Beech Farm was granted at the Principal Registry to Anna Pott (wife of Robert Pott, Esquire) of Riverside Beddington near Croydon in the County of Surrey the Daughter one of the Residuary Legatees.

I’m ordering the will for the usual 30 shillings, a bargain.

Yes, definitely her.  In 1851 her daughter Anna MacLean indeed married in St Pancras Robert Pott.  (And she was married by none other than Henry Brown, Rector of Woolwich.  And witnessed by her brother John George and her sister Catherine Octavia.)

In her will signed on 25 June 1862 and proved on 11th March 1880, she appointed as executors her sons William Henry Maclean and John George Maclean as her executors.  However these two sons did not prove the will before they too died so it was left to Ann Pott, her daughter and one of the residuary legatees, to do this.
