Notes for John Brown
The only record we have of John and his twin brother Henry Balfour is of their burial in the Leith South burial register and is transcribed, by me, as:
[ 31/03/1787 BROWN, HENRY BALFOUR (Old Parwish Registers Deaths 692/2 150 366 Leith South) page 366 of 485 ]
“ March & April 1787 365
“. . . .
“Brown
“John Brown, & Henry Balfour Brown sons of George Brown Esqr. Merchant in Leith, aged 2 weeks, died 31st March, buried 3d. April 1787 in Major Henry Balfours burying ground.”
And in 1815 they were joined “in the center [sic] of Major Balfours’ Tomb” by his wife Jean Elliott who was also their grandmother.
My guess is that the twins were slightly premature and this would have accounted for their early death.
