Notes for George Purvis RN
I owe his biographical information totally to Ronald Dunning, his descendant (thanks, Ronald).
He was in the navy and made a tidy sum from prize money, enabling him to buy the Blackbrook estate near Fareham and build a large “cottage” there.
His eldest son George Thomas Maitland Purvis was also in the navy and a captain. He married Mary-Jane Austen, niece of the famous Jane Austen. her father being Admiral of the Fleet Sir Francis Austen, the elder brother to Jane.
This of course ties in with Edward Cooper, one of Jane’s first cousins, who married Caroline Isabella Powys.
