Notes for Johane Stapleton
The Yorks visitation of 1584-5 says she was indeed dau. of Sir Brian Stapleton KG, who lived from c. 1321 to 1394, and that she d. in 1478 which I find hard to believe: the DNB article indicates that she might have been born before 1370.
Nov 2006: Leo van de Pas has discovered I had overlooked the Stapleton article which gives another three or four generations between Jehane/Jane/Joan and Sir Brian the Knight of the Garter. In fact the 1584 visitation gives one more generation that Dugdale’s of 1660 odd (which I do not have).
While the 1584-5 visitation says Johane was the dau. of Isabel Remston, the 1563-4 visitation and reportedly the 1680 odd one both omit that generation. As of this moment in time, I have no idea who is right.
