Notes for William Meadowe
S M W Meadows in his paper “Witnesham and the Meadows family” (1949-50), a copy of which is in the Society of Genealogists Library, states that this William’s will is with the Archdean of Suffolk’s wills, written on 14th Sept 1541 and proved on 9th Oct 1542; the will lists both his wife and his property in Rushmere, Martlesham, St Realings and Woodbridge.

S M W Meadoes also asserts that his father was John Medowe, a husbandman of Martlesham whose will is also with the Suffolk Archdeanery, written on 11th August 1531 and proved on 25th September 1541 and listing his wife Margaret.

Philip Copinger in “Manors of Suffolk”, vol 3, p. 123 writes of this William:

“... William Meadows, of Rushmere, yeoman, whose will is dated 14th Sept 1541 and was proved Arch Suff 9 Oct 1542.  The family [presumably Meadows] had held land in the parish [almost certainly Witnesham] since the time of Hen. II and Daniel the purchaser [grandson of this William] was lineally descended from Peter de Medowe, who was seized of land in Witnesham in 1188, and ancestor of the Earls Manvers”

I owe the finding of this paragraph to Norman Meadows, many thanks.
