Notes for Eugenia Picot
While Domesday Descendants p. 1023 clearly says that she was the mother of Gilbert Malet, this is now questioned on the soc.gen.med newsgroup. The argument against this is the descent of the manor of Tong which CP V 400 note (b) says was held by Ralph Picot, Eugenia’s father, and then descended clearly to the FitzBernards. If Gilbert Malet had been her son, then he would have held this manor, so the reasoning goes, but he didn’t so he was nt Eugenia’s son. However CP also says, p. 399 note (b), that the manor of Tong was not held in chief by the FitzBernards; thus it would not necessarily follow the normal rules of descent of properties held in chief.
It could even be that it was held in chief by the Malets!
