Notes for Rev Thomas Leigh
Burke’s LG states that his father was Theophilus Leigh of Adlestrop, Glos. and his mother was Mary, eldest dau. of James Lord Chandos and sister of James, 1st duke of Chandos.  Some of this family, but not Thomas son of Theophilus, is in Burke’s peerage of 1885, p. 800 and in Burke’s Peerage of 1849, p. 601.

However, the family is to be found in Burke’s Commoners of 1832-6, vol III, p. 226.

Thomas and Jane had 2 s.:
(1) James who changed his name to Perrott, presumably on inheriting from his maternal grandmother’s family, and dsp.
(2) Thomas.

Thomas’ elder brother was named William and William’s gt-grandson became lord Chandos.

These Leighs are said by Burke to be descended from the Cheshire Leighs by a Sir Thos Leigh who was lord mayor of London in 1558.  Other sources eg Victoria County History give a different picture and dates.

Extensive records of this family are held at the The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Archive.

Wikipedia states that Sir Thos Leigh, mayor, was the son of Roger and Anne legh of Stoneleigh, Warks and the gt-grandson of Sir Piers Legh II and quotes Ormerod’s Cheshire for this.  However Ormerod, vol iii, p. 677 in the Lyme pedigree, shows very few male issue and certainly no suggestion of a Roger.

Finally Vicary Gibbs in Complete Peerage vol VII, p. 566, note (a), states that the family claimed to be descended from the Leghs of High Legh, but suggest that the family had different origins altogether, referring to the Craven article, vol III, p. 501 where is is said that the Leighs (and other families) were strictly of London shops and counting houses.
