Notes for John McLean
Where did this John come from?

I have made various investigations into the life of this John.  In around 2010 I had come to the conclusion that he had not been born to his parents family.  But in 12018 some new indexes with additional information were release by the General Rocord Office and these clearly included this index record:

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname:
MCLEAN, JOHN     MELLON
GRO Reference: 1914  S Quarter in STOCKTON  Volume 10A  Page 119

His birth certificate was ordered, as a PDF file, and my transcription is:

1914 Births in the subdistrict of Stockton, Co Durham

No: 300
Birth: Twenty third May 1914. 2 Church Street Port Clarence Cowpen Bewley Stockton RD
Name: John
Sex: Boy
Father: James McLean
Mother: Bridget McLean formerly Mellon
Father Job: Labour at Blast furnace
Informant: B McLean Mother 2 Church Street Port Clarence Cowpen Bewley
Reg date: Ninth July 1914
Registrar: W Salmon Deputy Registrar

So I have now deleted all my previous enquiries and speculations and am trying to see what records can be found for the rest of his life.

Bridget remembers him and even remembers an anonymous present he sent her one Christmas.  He is said to have had a hard time in WW2 and at one stage had taken to the Drink.  At the end of his life he had a job in Catterick camp but one day did not turn up for work and was found in bed suffering from a severe Brain aneurism.  He could have been taken to any hospital within reach of Catterick.  He died soon after.  His death is thought to have been around the 1960s.

So the quest was on for his death in the public records.  Selections were made for all deaths first in Yorkshire within 20 years of 1962 and then in Co Durham for sound alike Mcleans:

Yorkshire deaths of John Mclean born from 1913 to 1915 and died from 1942 to 1982:

Last Name First Name Born Died Event    Location
  McLean John 1915 1962 1962 Middlesbrough, Yorkshire
McLean John King 1913 1973 1973 Leeds, Yorkshire
  MacLennan John 1914 1943 1943 Howden, Yorkshire

Co Durham deaths of John Mclean born from 1913 to 1915 and died from 1942 to 1982:

Last Name First Name Born Died Event Location
McLean Watkin John 1913 1976 1976 North Cleveland, Durham
McLean John Robert H 1915 1979 1979 Northumberland Central, Northumberland

Of the above, only the first death, registered in Middlesbrough looks right.

But then this curious information is in the Probate records:

McLean John of 27 Lincoln Street Middlesbrough died 7 April 1962 Administration York 29 May [1962] to Jane McLean widow.  Effects £541 19s 9d.

There is only the one registered death for John McLean in Yorkshire for that year, as above.  A slight problem is that the records have the death registration in Q1 of 1962 in Middlesbrough while the death date in Middlesbrough for probate is 7th April 1962, which is Q2.  For this the death certificate would be useful to see what death date is on that, possibly the certificate held in the Middlesbrough registration office as that is more original than the GRO version.

Then there is the question whether there were more than one John Mclean who died in Middlesbrough in 1962:  There were 2 who died in Mbro that year:

First name(s) Last name Birth year Death quarter  Death year  District  County

John McLean 1906 2           1962        Middlesbrough  Yorkshire
John McLean 1915 1           1962        Middlesbrough  Yorkshire

It was not thought he had ever married.

First name(s) JOHN
Last name MCLEAN
Marriage quarter 1
Marriage year 1934
JOHN MCLEAN married one of these people
Jane McCann
Spouse's last name McCann
District Middlesbrough
County Yorkshire
Country England
Volume 9D
Volume as transcribed 9D
Page number 943
Record set England & Wales Marriages 1837-2005

However the certificate shows that this marriage was of a John McLean who was 27 in 1934 and thus born in 1906-7.  This is the first of the two deaths in 1962 listed above, so is not John Mclean who was born in 1914.

The question is whether any documents could extend what we know of John McLean.  My preference is this marriage certificate as this should enable us to see whther the John son of James and Bridget mellon was the marrying man.  The marriage certificate gives the ages of each party and the name of their fathers.  So it has been ordered.

When I wrote the previous paragraph I had not listed all those who died in 1962, regardless of death date.

I think I will get his death certificate to find out who informed his death and where he was living at that time and where he died.
