TFPL, Dec 2020: The picture is even more complicated by George Hamilton’s later research in his magisterial “The House of Hamilton”. Instead of Isabella’s parents being James Robertoun and Christian Dundas he says they were John Robertoun and Margarte daughter of James Hamilton of Torrence..
In the Torrence article, pp. 851-6 it is unclear which James this might have been. Worse, there is no Margaret, daughter of any Hamilton of Torrence who married a Robertoun. Though there is an unnamed daughter of a John Hamilton of Torrence who married a ‘Robert Robertson of Rarnock’.
My conclusion is really that all of the ancestry of this wife of Gavin Hamilton of Airdrie should be deleted. However I am leaving the mystery here in case someone can resolve it and make sense out of apparent nonsense.
