Notes for Lucas de Keynes
On the Fine Rolls of Henry III for 28 Oct 220=27 Oct 1221 page, there is this entry for 28 Jul 1221:

“249    Buckinghamshire. To the sheriff of Buckinghamshire. Luke de Cahaignes has made fine with the king by 100s. for his relief of two parts of a knight’s fee in Milton in his bailiwick formerly of Amabilia de Bereville, his mother, which fall to him by hereditary right. Order that, having accepted security from him for the aforesaid 100s. to the king, he is to cause him to have full seisin without delay. Witness as above. By the same.”

The question then is, who was his father.  Salzman in his Cahaignes article writes that

“Hugh is returned in 1166 as holding two-thirds of a knight’s fee in Middleton (Keynes), which the king gave to him with the heir of that estate in Buckinghamshire[33].  He is mentioned in that county on the Pipe Rolls of 1158, 1165 and in 1168, when he paid on two thirds of a fee.

“[33] Red Book of Exch., 316”

This implies that Hugh married Amabilia de Bereville and by this was the father of Luke.

So I need to find the Red Book. Found and on p. 316 is written:

[AD1166]
“CARTA HUGONIS DE CHAHAINES
“De veteri feffamento [11] tenet Hugo de Chahaines de Rege ij[10] partes militis quas Rex dedit ei cum haerede ipsius terrae in Bukinhghamscira [12].”

However this Red Book entry does not identify Hugh with the Middleton holding, though the Pipe Roll entries might.

Also from the Red Book, in King John scutage roll of 1201-12. Hugo de Kahanis is listed for 2/3 of a knight’s fee in Bucks and Beds.
