On 26 Feb 1936, The Times gave him this obit:
REAR-ADMIRAL HAMILTON
Rear-Admiral james de Courcy Hamilton, formerly chief officer of the London Fire Brigade, died at his home in London on Monday at the age of 76.
He entered the Royal Navy in 1873. He was sub-lieutenant on the Helicon at the bombardment of Alexandria and during the Egyptian War of 1882, being promoted to lieutenant and awarded the medal and clasp and the Khedive’s bronze star. When captain of the Dreadnought in 1903 he was presented with the Coronation medal by King Edward VII. In July, 1903, he was appointed chief officer of the London Fire Birgade by the London County Council, being only the fourth officer in a period of 43 years. During his tenure the service was much improved. When he took control the Brigade had only one motor steamer, and when he resigned in April, 1909, on being appointed a director of the Army and navy Stores, it had six motor escapes and various other motor vehicles and appliances. Captain Hamilton was promoted to rear-admiral on the retired list in 1910, and in the War gave his services to the Ministry of Munitions. He was a Younger Brother of Trinity House, and a member of the Council of the Royal Society of Arts. He was made M.V.O. in 1909. He married in 1901 Mabel Sang and had a son and a daughter.
