Notes for William (II) Fossard
K-R: While a ward of the count of Aumale he seduced the count's sister and was forced to flee.  The king ordered the destruction of his castle at Birdsell but he was later restored to favour.

EYC II, 390 shows that he was heavily in debt to Aaron the Jew of Lincoln; I wonder if this was because Wm was forced by the king into either scutage on inheriting the barony and/or military expeditions and had to borrow money to fund same?  Having said this, it reveals a precarious feature of royal finances which relied on the Jews to, even at length, fund them out of trouble and probably led to their expulsion a hundred or so years later.

EYC, II, 328 says that in 1172 he paid scutage of £31 10s on 31.5 knights fees, a large landholding.
