NameSir John Maxwell [330, vol 1, pp. 464-5], [60, Boyd art, Vol II, p. 260 seq], [60, Arran article, Vol I, pp. 219-220]
Birth1421
Death1476
General2nd of Calderwood. A noted administrator and courtier. MSP.
Notes for Sir John Maxwell
m. (1) Margaret Borthwick, (2) Margaret Rutherford (with whom they had a son George).
Stirnet shows him to be of a cadet branch to the Maxwells of Carlaverock, see SP 6, pp. 469-471. But the link to this family is not documented. SP gives Sir William Fraser’s “Maxwells of Pollok” as a reference and also his “Carlaverock Book”. But the Calderwood chapter is in Voll II of Fraser’s work and I only have Vol I; Vol II is now on order.
In fact the final pages of Vol I were missing and I eventually got a replacement and Vol II was only letters, excellent evidence but not genealogy.
In Vol I p. 465 it reports that Mariota, daughter of Sir John Maxwell and Margaret dau of lord Borthwick, m. Robert first lord Boyd, Lord High Chamberlain of Scotland. Mariota and Robert were parents of the first earl of Arran and Elizabeth countess of Angus.
