Notes for Rev Thomas Hallifax
Oxford Alumni says his father was John of Springthorp, Lincs, minister.

From the list of rectors of Springthorpe, Lincs (http://www.springthorpe-village.org.uk/history/church/rectors.html):

John Halifax.   In 1654 and 1671.  John Halifax had two sons in Orders. Of these, Thomas matriculated at Brasenose Coll. Oxon 1679, proceeded B.A. 1682 and M.A. 1686. He became Vicar of Streatley, Berks 1693, and rector of Compton Bassett, Wilts in 1710; his will was proved on 2 May 1743. The other son, William Halifax, matriculated Brasenose Coll. Oxon 1671, became Scholar of Corpus Christi Coll. 1674, B.A 1675, M.A. 1679, Fellow 1682, B.D 1687 and D.D. 1695. He was Chaplain to the British Factory at Aleppo 1688 - 1695, Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons 1706, Rector of Old Swinford, Worcestershire 1699, and Salwarpe 1713, till his death in 1722, will proved on 15 Feb 1727.

Mar 2006, TFPL: In addition I have now examined the parish register for Springthorpe and there is indeed only one Hallifax recorded as rector, though there are intervals where the rector is unknown.  This rector is John Hallifax who was there from 1646 to 1676 when he died.  His wife was Elizabeth Inoltby (or similar) whom he married there in 1646.  I am perplexed that the family records should be so wrong.

Anyhow a further pedigree is being transcribed from the College of Arms, dated around 1780; it will be interesting to see what differences there are between this and the one from Suffolk Record Office.

TFPL, April 2006.  The College of Arms pedigree has arrived.  Basically it is the same as the one from Suffolk but gives a lot more detail.  Its problem is that it too is far removed from the surviving Springthorpe parish records.

I wonder if this is the real John Hallfiax who was ractor of Springthorpe from c.1646 to his death in c. 1676, from Alumni Cantabriensis:

Last Name: HALLIFAX First Name: JOHN College: TRINITY Entry Date: Easter, 1632 Full Text: Matric. sizar from TRINITY, Easter, 1632; B.A. 1635-6; M.A. 1639. Ord. deacon (Peterb.) Sept. 24, 1637; priest, June 9, 1639.Last Name: Hallifax

If it is he, I wonder if he was a curate anywhere before he got his rectorship?
