Notes for Sir Lewis Clifford KG
It is not certain that Eleanor was the mother of his children. He could have had an earlier wife.
CP in Vol III, p. 292, note (d) says that he was probably a brother of Roger, 5th lord Clifford, making him the son of Robert, 3rd lord Clifford.

In his article ‘The Clifford Family’ in the Yorkshire Archaeological Journal of 1905, vol 18, pp. 351-411, J W Clay too states that he was probably the son of Robert, 3rd baron Clifford and that he married Eleanor daughter of John de la Warr.
