Notes for Sir Oliver de Vaux
I am prepared to bet pound notes that he is the same person as Oliver de Vaux (d. 1238-1241) in Sanders' Baronies, p. 47, note (6) who married Petronells de Vaux, the heir of the Craon barony of Freston, and had a son John who d. 1287. Keats-Rohan, DD p. 757, has the same Oliver holding the Craon barony of Freiston. See the Genealogist, New Series XVIII, pp. 162-6 and 219-225, "The Fee of Craon" by E. M. Poynton. Both Oliver de Vaux and Petronella are descended from Domesday tenants, Robert de Vallibus (DP 382) and Guy de Craon (DP 464) respectively.
The 1594-5 Yorks Visitation, p. 228, lends a margin of credence to this bet.
