Notes for Sir Robert (III) de Septvans
My strong positive guess is that he was of the family of Septvans who held the barony, or part thereof, of Aldington, Kent.  See Sanders' Baronies p.1 which would make him Robert IV de Septvans.  If this is correct, he is descended from Helto, the Domesday landholder.  However Sanders says that this Robert IV had a son William, d. 1322,  who had a son William while CP says that Joan Septvans was a co-heir of (probably) Robert IV de Septvans.

K-R's DP, 293-4, also has Malger de Rokesle as an ancestor of the FitzHelto family of Aldington, Kent.  Malger had a grandson Helto fitz Richard fitz Malgar, who was father of William fitz Helto who gave a mill to Bermondsey (Priory? Yes, from Sanders, p. 1) in c. 1142.  In the Helto, p. 247, article K-R says that possibly Malger married a dau of Helto.

TFPL, Nov 2004: However...

I got his dates of b. c. 1249-1250 and d. bef Sep 1308 from Ronny Bodine and Thomas Spalding's otherwise excellent "Ancestors of Dorothea Poynts".  The problem with this birth date is that is was 20 years after his son-in-law in 1229 and is unlikely.

My conclusion is the he has been identified wrongly and that the father of Joan de Septvans who m. John de Cobham was much more likely to be Robert III de Septvans who d. in 1253 (Sanders, p. 1).  So I've changed his dates.
