SOME ANCESTORS OF  ELIZABETH  LEVESON

ELIZABETH LEVESON; a good and comprehensive pedigree in Stebbing Shaw’s Staffordshire, vol 2, p 169 “taken from the MSS of Huntbach, Burton Dr Wilkes, etc”; her eldest half-brother, Sir Richard was father of Sir Walter, father of Admiral Sir Richard, all of Lilleshall; on the latter’s death sp the estates passed to the line of Sir John Leveson of Haling (grandson of Nicholas, Lord Mayor, elder brother of James, next below); his two granddaughters married respectively Sir Peter Temple of Stowe and Sir Thomas Gower; Lilleshall and Trentham remained with the Gower family, latterly Dukes of Sutherland, the former until about 1920; the Countess of Sutherland has residual interests around Stoke and in Shropshire, mainly mineral rights and similar; this compiler was involved, for the Diocese, in the successful, Lottery-funded scheme of restoration of the remarkable Trentham Mausoleum;
JAMES LEVESON; of Wolverhampton, merchant of the Staple; acquired the former abbeys of Lilleshall and Trentham (but was not the original grantee; frequently referred to as Sir James, but there may be no evidence of knighthood; not checked in Shaw; died 7 July 7 E VI; married firstly a daughter of Wrottesley
