Notes for Isabella de Vipont Lady of Appleby
In his article ‘The Clifford Family’ in the Yorkshire Archaeological Journal of 1905, vol 18, pp. 351-411, J W Clay states that she was born in 1254.
Clay also quotes her Yorkshire IPM of 2 July 1292 in which it is said that lady Isabel de Clifforde gave a mill and six mares to ‘Alice, her mother’. This naming conflicts with all other information about her blood mother but might well refer to her father-in-law’s second wife, otherwise known as the ‘Comitessa de Loretto’, thereby giving, for the first time known to me, her forename.
