General1st earl, held from before the Conquest.
Notes for Ralph the Staller Earl of Norfolk
Acted as staller or constable for Edward the Confessor, who had invented this role.
The weird thing is that he is in K-R's book Domesday Descendants (p. 1119) when she reports that his son, Ralph II, actually held land in Domesday but is not within he previous book Domesday People. Possibly the answer is that in 1886, Ralph II had already rebelled and Godric Dapifer (DP, p. 219) was actually looking after them then.
