He was born Wingfield and in 1802 took the additional name of Stratford (Twisden, p. 410 and Burke’s peerage), possibly in honour of his mother's family, the Stratfords, earls of Aldborough (I), which family had a series of brothers dying dsp(m) (CP, Vol I). Maybe he got some dosh?
