Notes for Walker Ferrand
By his nephew J A Busfeild:

"Of my uncle's character, temper and disposition I scarcely feel that I am an impartial judge.  The subject is one which I always approach with great tenderness, lest I should be thought to say something uncharitable.  That he possessed many estimable qualities cannot be doubted.  I willingly assume that he was a most affectionate son, an abiding, faithful friend, hospitable in the extreme, warm-hearted where he inclined, and in his social intercourse esteemed, as men of fortune, with frank, agreeable manners, generally are; but, withal, he was a man of imperious temper, self-will, and would not endure that his opinions should be thwarted, or his judgement questioned.  The consequence was that he often found himself, - especially towards the close of life, estranged from neighbours and relatives with whom he had been long previously on terms of friendship and affection.

"As a remarkable instance of the imperious way in which he asserted his power, and ignored the feelings of others, I may refer to the circumstance, that when he experienced, upon his second marriage, some difficulty respecting a pew, as if by magic a new Chapel was raised and appended to the ancient Parish Church; and with such rapidity were the works executed that it was only when the foundation was being dug, and the dead disturbed, that the feelings of the people were aroused and with some difficulty a riot prevented."

Named, in Benjamin Ferrand’s will of 1790, as a remainder heir to the Ferrand estates and inherited in 1837 when his elder brother Edward died sp.  Walker likewise dspm.  On Walker’s death in 1846 the remainder heirs to the Ferrand esates were, in turn, his sisters Jane, Sarah and Anna and then their male lines; in 1846 Jane had already died, in 1798, as had her son Charles who dsp, so the estates went to Sarah Busfeild his second sister who then changed her name back to Ferrand and inherited the estates personally but still subject to cousin Benjamin’s will.
