Notes for Christopher Ferrand
There is thought to be a relationship between these Ferrands and those of Skipton and Carlton Hall but even Johnson Atkinson Busfeild, that significant researcher, could not find the link.

In Dugdale’s Visitation of York there is the cryptic note "To expect a certificate from Mr Ferrand of Carleton, that this gentleman is of his family" (p. 173 of Clay's edition).  Nothing more is known, I am not sure which gentleman Mr Dugdale saw and certain there is not even any proposed relationship to Mr Ferrand of Carleton.  I wonder if Chirstopher Ferrand was descended from an illegitimate line?  The prosperity of the chap, lack of clear relationship and some muddying of the waters are frequently a consequence of an illegitimate son set up with some estate by a fond father.

In The Genealogist magazine, Vol 5 of 1929-31, p. 51 there is an unsourced descent of the Dean of St Pauls from Edward III which included the Ferrands of Carlton Hall:

Edward III
Lionel
Philippa
Elizabeth Mortimer = Sir Henry Percy (Hotspur)
Elizabeth percy = John Lord Clifford KG
Thomas, Lord Clifford = Jane Dacre
Maud Clifford = Edmund Dudley
Thomas Dudley = Grace Thyrkell
Richard Dudley = Dorothy Sandforth
Edmund Dudley *
Mary Dudley = Thomas Ferrand *
Eleanor Ferrand = Thomas Heber *

The last three lines, marked with asterisks, appear on JAB's book, Fragments of Bingly parish, p. 102.  There is no descent from this Thomas Ferrand to the Ferrands of Bingley, it is too late.
