Notes for Stephen Powys Lord Lilford
His birth was registered with the surname of Lilford:

Name:                    Mother's Maiden Surname:
LILFORD, STEPHEN         BRANDLING
GRO Reference: 1869  J Quarter in OUNDLE  Volume 03B  Page 185
________________

The two pages, 30 and 31, of the Lilford cum Wigthorpe baptisms are missing from the images on Ancestry so this is the certain reason why his baptism cannot be found, assuming, of course, that he was like his next brother, baptised there.  The last baptism on page 29 is on 12th August 1866, the first on page 32 is on 7th June 1874, so 8 years of records have vanished.

The parish registers have been deposited in Northamptonshire Record office at Northampton so I may e-mail them to enquire about these pages.

I wonder if the Bishops’ Transcripts have survived?  Add to my enquiry?

I have put in this query:

“I wish to obtain a copy of the baptism image for Stephen Powys (or Lilford) born on 8th March 1869 at Lilford, Northants.  Unfortunately the copies of pages 30 and 31 of the Lilford cum Wigthorpe baptism register are missing from Ancestry's site, thus losing 8 years from 1866 to 1874.  If you do not have these pages in your copy of the register, do you by any chance have copies of the Bishops' Transcript and can you supply that image instead?”

Bingo!  Page 31 contained his baptism, received on22nd Feb 2022.

His baptism image, thanks to Northants Archives, transcript by me:

In fact this was a separate register for the church of Lilford cum Wigthorpe which was within the parish of Achurch.
_______________

In 1871 he was with his parents and siblings at Lilford, aged 2 and born at Lilford.

In 1881 he was at school in Sunningdale, Berks, born at Achurch, Northants and aged 11

Not found in 1891, 1901 or 1911 censuses.
_______________

In 1939 he was in Weymouth:

Note that the words “Lilford The Rt Hon Lord” were in red ink and thus added after 1939.  He did not succeed to the peerage until 1945.

The birth date in this Register confirms that from other sources including his baptism.
_______________

Wikipedia says that he was adopted by his nominal parents and then had his name changed to Stephen Powys.  In those days there were no official records of adoptions so this cannot be verified but does explain why his birth registration cannot be found.
Further there are statements that he was originally a godson of his father.

So I wonder if this birth record has anything to do with him?

_______________

TFPL, 14 Oct 2017: The certificate has arrived and the details are:

Registration District: Oundle
Registration Year: 1869
Counties: Northampton and Huntingdon

Cert No: 248
Date: Eighth March 1869
Name: Stephen
Sex: Boy
Father: Thomas Littleton Lord Lilford
Mother: Emma Elizabeth Lilford, formerly Brandling
Father job: Baron Lilford
Sig: Lilford, father, Lilford Hall
Reg date: Seventh March [sic] 1869
Registrar: James Gann, Registrar

Correction in Margin: In no 248 Col 8 for March substitute April corrected on the 10th May 1869 by me James Gann Registrar in the presence of T Dakin, A Barker, Robt Richardson Supt Regr.

Date of certified copy: 12 October 2017

Comment on the correction and other matters:

1. The correction was to a data impossibility, that the birth could have been registered before the child was born.  The fact of their being a correction may have led to the fanciful tales of adoption, above.

2. All other entries were factually correct, particularly the surnames of the father and the mother.

3. There was no space to enter on the form the boy’s surname, which was Powys.  So subsequent extracts for the index and other date have given him the surname of his parents.  His father, the peer, may have been well aware of all this and may also have rejoiced in a bit of sport by being so literal.

It is quite likely that the registrars were unaware of what was going on and that their leg was being pulled.

But in the end the boy did get his accidental surname when he held the peerage for the last four years of his life.  He may, even, not have been aware of what had been done.  In the 1939 register he clearly gave his surname as Powys.  And a clerk had written it in that he was the Rt Hon Lord Lilford, which he became in 1945.
______________

There is no burial record of his burial that I have found.  But there is a m emorial to him on his father;s memorial in the church at Thorpe Achurch, Northants:

“(side) CLEMENTINA (uxor) et STEPHANUS filius posuerunt. Requiescat in pace.””

(Page 7 of the booklet of Memoirial Inscriptions of that church.)
