NOTE on her birth date:

The above birth registration and baptism were both done in 1881.  Fact.  Yet on many subsequent records she is said to have been born on 14 October 1882.  This has to have been wrong, at least for the year.  Though I can believe that she was born on October 14th 1881.  I could even spend a tenner in getting a birth certificate, but it is not worth that sort of money!

I have corrected her birth date to 14 Oct 1881.

The BMD index has an entry on Q1 of 1915 for Evelyn M Powys in St Martin district marrying a chap with the surname of Grant; vol 1a, p. 1044.  Nothing more is known of her husband.   There is no other marriage of an Evelyn Powys, though there are loads of Powises.

In 1901 she was living with her uncle Richard Atherton Powys in Chiswick, Mx; she was 19 and b. in Putney, Surrey.

In 1911 she and Averil were living with their mother in London (see her mother’s Notes for the record of this).

No births in England and Wales can be found for any Grant with a mother’s maiden name of Powys from 1915 to c. 1940.

Firmly, in 1930 she was in the USA with her sister Averil.  Evelyn was then married, almost certainly as a second wife, to Fred E Quipp and her census record is:

She and her sister both gave ages a year or so younger than actual.  Evelyn was born around October 1881 so was 48 in April 1930; Averil was born in March 1890 so was 40 in April 1930.

Note that she clearly reported that her immigration to USA was in 1920, ten years ago, when she would have been 39.  She also said that her age at her first marriage was 32, fifteen or so years previously and thus around 1915.  This does correspond with the above marriage in 1915, so it looks believable.  Might Alexander W H have died in WW1?

In 1934 she and her sister came over, both as US citizens, to stay at Ealing London.  I wonder if this was to see their mother, probably for the last time?

Ancestry has also delivered a poor copy of the 1940 census in which Evelyn and Averil were still together but Evelyn was a widow, so Fred must have died.  I cannot read Evelyn’s occupation bu Averil still seems to have been a bookkeeper at a bank.
