Notes for Alice Norman
Some P-L family record shows that her surname was Norman.

On the 1901 census there is indeed an Alice Norman in Chesham, aged 20 and born there.  Her parents were:

Joseph Norman, aged 50, born in Chesham and a book finisher
Elizabeth Norman, aged 47 and also born in Chesham.

They and 4 adult offspring and a grandson were all living at 1 New Foot Path, Chesham, Bucks.

In the Canadian 1911 census she was stated to have been born in England in Sept 1880.  This ties in with the above.

No sign of her death on FreeBMD up to c. 1950.

July 2012: I am not now sure that Philip Barrington Darnell ever married.  Perhaps I need to see if he left a will.

July 2012, TFPL: He indeed left a will, probate on 30th Jan, co-executor was his widow Alice Darnell (big progress!).

No subsequent marriage could be found for her.

She was alive in January 1958,
when she was co-executor of her husband’s will.  She never showed a second forename in any record found for her and only these Alice Darnells born in 1880 died in 1958 or later:

Last name First name Born Died Event Location

DARNELL ALICE 1880 1973 1973  Spilsby, Lincolnshire
DARNELL ALICE 1881 1976 1976  Chesterfield, Derbyshire

The first of these looks the most likely so I am purchasing it.  (Apr 2015: In fact I’ve only purchased the will.)

In Sep 1909 an Alice Norman entered Canada at Quebec City on her way to Victoria, British Combia.  She was 29, born in 1880 and her ship was the Empress of Britain.  She had no occupation.
______________

In 1975 an Alice Darnell died in Skegness, Lincs.  She had left a will dated 7th June 1961 with the beneficiaries of her daughters Alice Mary and Ellen Darnell.

An Alice Mary was born in Q1 of 1975 in Spilsby district, Lincs.
An Ellen Darnell was born in Spilsby in district in Q1 of 1915.

In the 1911 census, Alice was the wife of George Darnell, a farmer aged 39; they had 3 children: Dorothy aged 9, Alice Mary aged 6 and John aged 4.

I conclude that this Alice Darnell and her daughters were no relation of Philip Barrington Darnell.

So was Philip Darnell’s widow in fact the Alice who died in Chesterfield in 1976?  Sounds like another will to purchase.  She was born in 1981.
