September 2020, TFPL: I have just found that gallantry awards are held under WO 373 at The National Archive.  So I entered Powys as part of the name for the years of WW2 and was surprised to get the following up, showing that he had qualifed and presumably been working as a doctor.  Perhaps I should look around to see if any other information on him can be found…  (Done: Can’t. Oh yes it can: he died in Lymington, Hants and left a will.)

During the period 8th Feb to 10th Feb 41 Lieut K.C.P. Thompson, Regimental Medical Officer, 2/4 K.A.R. set and exceptionally fine example of endurance and devotion to duty.

During a period of six hours he attended to the needs of the wounded and supervised their evacuation whilst under fire, regardless of his own safety.  During the day, without water and in a country lacking in shade he continued performing his duties.  A night-fall Lieut Thompson was ordered to evacuate the wounded and sick to Mamaraputh, a carry of eight miles.  By his person example and ceaseless encouragement he succeeded in getting all except two men into the post.  Later that night he went out alone to search for the m issing men.

Lastly, when a rescue force set off next morning, 10th Feb, to bring in the remainder of the unit, the doctor, regardless of his personal fatigue and privations accompanied it and again superintended the evacuation of the remaining sick and wounded.

The London Gazette entry for his MC was published on 21st October 1941, Supplement 35316, pp. 6086-7:

“Lieutenant Kenneth Cameron Powys Thomson, East Afric Army Medical Corps (attached King’s African Rifles).”

Note that this did not have the ‘P’ that was included in his name in the citation.

In the London Gazette of Tues, 16th Feb 1915, for Weds 17 Feb 1915, there were more than 20 pages of persons listed for gallant and distinguished service in the field among whom was a Lieut K C Thomson of the Royal Scots Fusiliers on p. 1662.  But this was highly unlikely to have been him as he was a mere 16 years old at that time and would hardly have been a full Lieut.

In the London Gazette of 20 February 1920:

THOMSON Kenneth Cameron Powys of Brick Cottage Sway Lymington Hants died 18 December 1968  Probate Winchester 26 March.  £1947.

His will was ordered on 4th Sept 2020.  Del on 10 Sep.
___________________

The probate said he was of Brick Cottage, Sway, Lymington, Hants and previously of Halnaker Hill, Milford-on-Sea.

His very simple will left everything to his wife. with no mention of his sons.

I am curious that a doctor left so little at the end of his life.  Did he give up practising as a doctor after WW2?  Perhaps the British medical council records, available on Ancestry, will provide a little more information.  It is possible that he originally lived at Halnaker and owned it and then transferred it to his sons some years before he died.  There are reports that there is an older house there with many modern residences in the grounds.

In hsi will, signed on 21st July 1963, he said he was living at Halnaker Hill, Milford-on-Sea, Hants.  The witnesses to his will were his sons Ianin Thomson, Accountant of Halnaker, Milford, Hants and B E C Thomson, Engineer also of Halnaker, Milford, Hants.
