Notes for John de Meaux
C T Clay in “Early Yorkshire Families” records that;

(a) John was son of Gamel, son of Ketel, son of Norman.
(b) John’s son Robert m. Maud, dau. of Hugh Canin and continued in the male line to John IV de Meaux who dsp aft 1377.
(c) John has a very probable younger brother Peter from whom the Meaux family of Owthorne descended to a Peter de Meux who d. a minor in 1349-50 with his heirs being the three daus of Philip de Meaux his grandfather.

In particular Clay cites an article in Yorkshire Archaeological Journal xliii, 99-111 plus the appendix on MIs.

If what Clay says makes sense (when I get hold of the YAJ article), there needs to be some heavy revision of the claimed ancestry of the Meux family of Gatenby, Isle of Wight.  Currently, Dec 2005, it is looking as if this line should be disconnected from the medieval Meaux families of Yorkshire.

Jan 2006, TfPL: I’ve just got Clay’s article on “The Family of Meaux”.  What it makes clear is that this John is not an ancestor of the family that is claimed to be ancestors of the Meux of Gatenby, Isle of Wight.  This John was the elder son and it was his younger brother Peter of Owthorne who was the ancestor of the claimed line.  Fortunately at the end of this article, Clay gives a brief account of the family of Owthorne.
